Google Opens Search Console Social Media Tracking Worldwide
Google has expanded platform properties in Search Console to all account holders globally, completing a rollout that began earlier this month.

The updated tracking system allows publishers and creators to monitor how users find their social media posts and online videos through Google Search, Google Discover, and Google News.
Access for Non-Website Owners
Under the expansion, users can connect profile accounts from four supported networks: Instagram, TikTok, X, and YouTube.
Search Console previously required users to verify control of a domain name or website subpath using domain name system records or uploaded files.
Platform properties allow account owners to verify access by signing directly into their social media accounts.
This design allows creators who do not own websites to access Google Search performance reporting.
Google outlined the purpose of the feature in its technical support documentation:
"If you're a creator or publisher who posts on platforms like Instagram, TikTok, X, and YouTube, you can use Search Console to monitor how people find your content when searching on Google."
Reporting Features and Available Metrics
Each connected account operates as an independent property within the Search Console interface.
The system displays total search clicks, total impressions, average click-through rates, and average search positions.
Users can view specific search queries that lead searchers on Google to individual social media posts, Instagram Stories, or videos.
The platform property system provides three distinct reporting views:
- Performance Report: Details total clicks, impressions, click-through rates, and average search positions, with options to filter data by individual posts and search queries.
- Insights Report: Shows high-level traffic trends, top-performing posts, and discovery paths on Google Search.
- Achievements: Tracks performance milestones and click thresholds reached by content creator profiles over time.
Measurement Scope and App Isolation
Platform properties track search performance exclusively on Google services.
They do not record user activity that takes place inside external social media applications.
Google specified these tracking boundaries in its published guidance:
"Platform properties only show how your content performs on Google Search. They don't track when people see your content on the platform itself (for example, they won't show how many times your video appeared on TikTok)."
Internal platform metrics like video completion rates, follower counts, post shares, and internal network searches remain absent from Search Console dashboards.
Search Console tracks specific media types based on user interaction.
When an Instagram Story appears on Google Search, Search Console logs an impression.
A user clicking that result generates a recorded click.
For videos, an impression records when the item surfaces in search results or Discover feeds.
Selecting the video registers a click, even when the media plays inside an embedded Google viewer.
Connection Setup and Security Requirements
Adding a platform property requires selecting the property menu in Search Console, choosing a target network, and authorizing access via automated account login.
Here's a simple step-by-step guide:
- Go to search.google.com/search-console
- Click on Search property under the Google Search Console logo
- Now click on the Add property button
- Click on your social media platform where you have an account
- Verify the access by clicking the red Continue button
- Wait and it will automatically add your social media profile in the Search Console dashboard

It may take up to 48 hours to update the statistics.
Organizations managing multiple profiles must register each account individually to generate separate data reports. Data processing begins upon setup, with initial charts populating after a few days.
Google maintains periodic checks to ensure account ownership remains valid.
Google documented the rules governing active account connections:
"For security, ownership is periodically checked. If your connection is lost, either because an external login expired, access to your platform property will pause until you re-verify."
Re-verifying an account restores access to existing historical data without restarting the data collection history.
Google currently limits platform properties to Instagram, TikTok, X, and YouTube.
Other social networks, including Facebook and LinkedIn, do not have platform property integration yet.
