Google Pixel Tag Finally Arrives as $29 AirTag Rival
For years, Android users have had to rely on trackers made by Motorola, Chipolo, Pebblebee and other companies to get an AirTag-like experience.
Google finally closed that gap on August 12, introducing the Pixel Tag, its first in-house item tracker and a new piece of hardware built around the company’s Find Hub network.

Google is not putting the Pixel Tag on sale immediately. The tracker will arrive on November 11 for $29, with a four-pack priced at $99.
That puts Google's device directly at the same price points as Apple's current AirTag lineup, turning what was once an Android ecosystem gap into a direct hardware competition.
The Pixel Tag is a small, pill-shaped device with a gray "Fog" finish and Google's G logo.
It weighs about 12 grams and uses a replaceable CR2032 coin-cell battery that Google says can last for more than a year. The tag carries an IP67 rating for dust and water resistance.
There is one design decision that may immediately affect how people use it: the tracker does not have a built-in keyring hole, hook or clip.
Users will need an accessory or another way to attach it to keys, luggage, bags and other belongings.
The device does have a physical button, but its main purpose is not to control the tracker itself.
Pressing it can make a connected phone play a sound, which helps when someone can find the Pixel Tag but has misplaced the phone.
Google's bigger push is inside the tag.
The Pixel Tag connects to Android's Find Hub network, Google's crowdsourced system for locating lost devices and accessories.
A tag does not need to remain connected directly to its owner's phone for its position to be reported.
Nearby compatible Android devices can detect it over Bluetooth and relay location information through the network, allowing the owner to see where the tag was last detected in Find Hub.
Google has been building that network since it launched its Android device-finding infrastructure, with Find My Device later becoming Find Hub.
The company has also expanded support beyond its own hardware through third-party trackers, giving Pixel Tag a network that already exists rather than requiring Google to build a completely new service around the product.
The Pixel Tag also brings two different forms of short-range precision technology, which is where Google's tracker gets more interesting than a basic Bluetooth finder.
The first is Ultra-Wideband, or UWB. When the user gets close enough to the tag and has a compatible UWB device, Find Hub can show the distance and direction to the tracker.
That is the same basic idea behind precision-finding systems that guide users toward a lost item rather than simply dropping a marker on a map.
The second is Bluetooth 6.0 Channel Sounding. Google is using that technology to provide precise distance measurements without depending entirely on UWB.
Channel Sounding can provide the distance to the tracker but does not provide the same directional information that UWB can deliver.
For Pixel owners, compatibility is more complicated than simply owning an Android phone.
Google device owners need a Pixel 10 or newer to make use of Bluetooth 6.0 Channel Sounding.
UWB support for the Pixel Tag requires a Pro Pixel model dating back to the Pixel 6 generation. The newly announced base Pixel 11 still does not include UWB, meaning the more advanced directional finding experience is reserved for supported Pro models and other compatible hardware.
The same technology reaches Google's watch platform.
Pixel Watch models from the fourth generation support Channel Sounding, while Pixel Watch 2 and newer models can use UWB.
That means finding a misplaced item does not always require pulling out a phone.
Google is also tying the tracker into Gemini.
Pixel Buds users can ask Gemini to locate or ring a Pixel Tag, adding voice control to the finding process.
Google's latest devices are increasingly using Gemini as a control layer across hardware, and the Pixel Tag becomes another example of that strategy.
Google's own positioning for the product is simple:
“Less searching, more finding.”
The timing of the launch matters because Google did not enter this market from scratch. Android already had access to Find Hub-compatible trackers, including Motorola's Moto Tag products.
Motorola's newer Moto Tag 2 also supports UWB and Bluetooth 6.0 Channel Sounding, giving Android buyers an existing alternative before Google's own tracker reaches stores.
That makes the Pixel Tag less about creating an Android tracking category and more about Google finally putting its own hardware behind a network it already operates.
The hardware has also been a long time coming. The name "Pixel Tag" resurfaced publicly in July after early Amazon listings for Pixel 11 products identified a mysterious Google accessory using that name.
At that point, Google had not officially confirmed the tracker, and the leaked listings contained other incorrect or inconsistent details, making the accessory reference the stronger clue rather than definitive proof.
Today, on August 12, the uncertainty is gone.
Google has now confirmed the product, its pricing, its integration with Find Hub and its November release date. The company has also confirmed that the tracker uses UWB, resolving one of the biggest questions surrounding the leaks.
There is still an important distinction between finding an item nearby and finding one that is far away.
Nearby precision depends on compatible hardware in the user's hands, while remote location depends on Google's Find Hub network having Android devices close enough to detect and report the tag. The latter is a network feature rather than something the Pixel Tag can accomplish by itself.
Google also has existing protections against the misuse of Bluetooth trackers.
Android's Unknown Tracker Alerts can detect compatible trackers that have become separated from their owners and appear to be traveling with another person. The system can show where the tracker was detected, make it play a sound and provide steps for disabling it.
Google says the information used for these alerts is processed and temporarily stored in encrypted form on the device rather than being shared with Google or other users.
That safety system matters for Pixel Tag because the product enters a category that has faced growing scrutiny over unwanted tracking. The protections are not unique to Google's own tracker and already extend to compatible Find Hub tags and Apple AirTags on supported Android devices.
The Pixel Tag's $29 price also puts Google in a familiar position. A single device costs the same as Apple's AirTag 2, while Google's four-pack at $99 matches Apple's four-pack pricing as well. Google is not trying to win the category through a lower entry price.
It is asking Android users to buy into the same kind of first-party hardware and software combination Apple has offered for years.
The first Pixel Tag units will go on sale November 11.
Until then, Google's announcement leaves the real-world test of its network, battery life and precision for later this year, when consumers can finally put the company's long-delayed tracker on their keys, bags, wallets and luggage.
